China: Drop in garlic export price increases trade risks

"Our garlic comes from Jinxiang, Laiwu and Pizhou. The export season lasts from the beginning of June until March the next year. Compared to last year, this year's garlic production area has increased, growing the production by 45%, while the market price has dropped over 50%," according to Ms. Julie Wang of Jining Greenstream Fruits & Vegetables Co Ltd.

"The drop of the garlic export price has given rise to blind purchases by many market actors, and it has created a chaotic export market with more trade risks. Currently, our garlic is exported through the port of Qingdao to Europe, the Middle East, South East Asia, South America and Africa. Under the influence of promotion and other factors, compared to other agricultural products, the garlic price is very unstable. Because of this, we are constantly working to open new markets."

"Jining Greenstream Fruits & Vegetables mainly exports garlic and fruit, such as apples, pears, pomeloes and grapes to Russia, Brazil, the Middle East and Central and South America. Through many years of development, these markets have already matured. When exporting overseas, we ship our products from the ports of Qingdao, Shenzhen and Xiamen. We export our products to Russia over land from Manzhouli and Tarbaghatay."
