China: Potato prices unlikely to rise again soon

This summer's harvest is almost over. After the work is finished, many farmers will have to decide how many potatoes they are going to plant for the next season. With the recent downturn in potato prices, the profits from planting potatoes are getting lower and lower. Farmers are begining to have doubts about this decision. At this moment, many farmers are already suffering losses because of the current situation.

According to www.sci99.com monitoring, in Shandong province, the area of potato cultivation has increased by about 10 000 ha compared to previous years. Jiangsu, Anhui, Henan, Hubei and other provinces involved in potato production have also significantly increased cultivation areas. At some places it's even doubled, which has caused a substantial increase in supply. Furthermore, potato prices were also affected by an overall fall in the prices of vegetables in May and June. Experts are not very optimistic about future developements.
