BLE Marketreport KW25/17

Competition for German lettuce came from Belgium

Salad
The only competition for German lettuce was lettuce from Belgium, which accounted for about a quarter of the supply. Sales generally ran smoothly. The valuations were often fixed on a stable level. There was an upward tendency for premium quality. Occasionally there was too much product supplied, which is why the retailers had to gradually reduce their calls. Iceberg lettuce came from inland, as well as Cologne and Frankfurt and the Netherlands. The delivery was unproblematic. Smooth sailing was enabled by the good weather and the low prices, mostly for domestic products, which fell even further in some places. The various colorful varieties of lettuce from Germany were generally ordered in a sufficient volumes. This caused stable prices, only lowered rarely. For lamb's lettuce from inland supply and demand were perfectly balanced. There were no major changes to orders.

Apples

Because there was steady demand and a balanced range, the prices for imported goods stayed stable and rarely changed. Oversupplies could be prevented. European volumes obviously shrank and were suffering from problems of condition.

Pears
As usually at this point of the season, South Africa, Chile and Argentina dominated the field: Overall there was a quiet demand which could be met without a hassle, even though the supply was slightly limited.

Table Grapes
Trade was led by Italy. Egypt gained importance. Brazil, India and China played a supplementary role and the Spanish campaigne began. Overall there were enough supplies to meet the continuous demand.

Strawberries
German strawberries dominated the trades. Generally, one could witness a friendly interest in the fruit. Supplies were limited, which is why traders made their calls on Monday already. After this, prices climbed gradually.

Apricots
Sugar apricots from Turkey were willingly bought, which is why volumes from southern European countries flatted out and there was oversupplies in that sector. To speed up the trading process, producers had to lower their demands.

Cherries
While Spanish and Italian cherries lost importance, the presence of Turkish and domestic offers grew significantly. Generally, the supply was too big which caused prices for producers to drop, even though the demand was lively.

Peaches and Nectarines
Not everyone was successful in emptying out their storages since the inflow was too extensive and simply surpassed the demand. As a result, prices often dropped, especially for fruit with conditional problems.

Kiwis
Imports from New Zealand were in the lead. The presence of offers from Chile rose. Europe only plays a small role in the sector. Overall, supply and demand were balanced.

Lemons
Supplies sufficed to meet the continuous demand, therefore prices remained stable.

Bananas
As supply and demand were leveled, the valuations did not change much.

Cauliflower
The widespread summer heat significantly slowed down sales. Retailers reacted and limited the range. In some places, sales were smoothed out by reductions of the price.

Cucumbers
The cucumber business is ruled by domestic products. Imports from Belgium and the Netherlands are only supplementary. The interest was not exactly spectacular but overall seemed to have been satisfactory.

Tomatoes
There were abundant volumes on the market. Even with great demand, stores were rarely sold out. The valuations were supposed to drop but stayed unchanged in most places.

Bell Pepper
As usual, the Netherlands were the market leaders, supplemented by Belgium and Turkey. In Hamburg and Munich, one could find additional Moroccan imports. Domestic peppers could rarely be seen and were not as important.

Asparagus
Supplies from German producers have reduced significantly in the last few days. This opened the market for competitors from the Netherlands and Poland. The interest slows down considerably at the end of the domestic season, in parallel with lowered supplies.

Onions
Onions came mostly from Spain. New Zealand dominated in the field of household goods. Generally, prices did not move too much. Only occasionally, traders had to correct there calls due to low demand.
