Sieglinde new potatoes popular in Germany

"The first batches of Sieglinde DOP new potatoes from Galatina became available in supermarkets on June 1st. We are increasingly aware of the territory's connection to our products, as nature and the experience of farmers are what makes them excellent. Our new potatoes are genuine and truly unique: they are harvested and sorted and reach consumers directly," explains Enzo Manni, who manages the Acli Racale cooperative together with his son Federico.

The Sieglinde variety was obtained in Germany in 1935. It was introduced to Salento after the Second World War and the local early production is appreciated both in Italy and in Europe, with Germany being the leading importer.

The potatoes are young, with a deep yellow skin. The rusty "chocolate" colour is due to the red soil they are grown in. The shape is oblong-long with an average size. What is more, they have a low starch (17% max) and dry matter (21% max) content.

This year in particular, the PDO produce is registering excellent yields and quality. In accordance with the production standard, the produce is not washed, which increases its shelf-life. In addition, being new potatoes, they are harvested by hand to avoid any damage.

The open field campaign will continue until the first week of July. Varieties: mainly Sieglinde with lower quantities of Annabelle, Nicola and Erika. "Yellow firm tubers grown with both traditional and organic methods."

At Macfrut, Acli Racale presented its new packaging, available in the vertbag and paper versions. "The new packaging creates a direct link with our territory and also indicates that the potatoes are harvested by hand and are unwashed. In the future, we will have to promote DOP Patata Novella di Galatina more, both in Italy and abroad, as well as its connection with our lovely territory," reports Federico Manni.
