Spain: Red Valentine potato volume, greater than in previous years

New potato varieties are gaining ground in the consumer market, where the demand for new products increases and other varieties are left behind. This is what happened last year; "in the rest of Europe there was a strong demand and 70% of our production was exported under programs," explains David Sánchez of PepSur Marketing. Portugal, France, Belgium and the Netherlands are the main destinations for these potatoes, which stand out for their, "beautiful red peel and high yield, and which are adapted to Mediterranean climates," he points out.

As a result of this, more has been planted this campaign in anticipation of a growth in the demand; however, there is some oversupply and this is taking a toll on prices, which are very different to last year's. "There is a lot of price variability, although it also depends on the quality you are looking for," clarifies Sánchez.

There are now other countries that also produce the Red Valentine and which could become competitors for the Spanish production at any given time. Among them, the most noteworthy are Israel, Hungary, Macedonia or Morocco.
