Hungary: Sour cherry production volume 30% below potential

According to the Hungarian Fruit and Vegetable Interprofessional Organization and Product Board (FruitVeB) and the Interprofessional Organization and Product Board for Apples and Other Fruits of North-Eastern Hungary (ÉKASZ), a record volume of up to 90,000 tonnes of sour cherries could have been harvested this year if the weather conditions had been favourable; however, there has actually been a 30 percent loss of yield, bringing the production down to a below-average 60-65 thousand tonnes.

The situation differs considerably depending on the areas and growing districts. A good or very good yield can be expected, for example, for the early-ripening varieties in Érd, which accounts for about 20 percent of the Hungarian sour cherry production; however, the yield is lower than average for the later varieties grown in places like Kántorjánosi, Újfehértó or Debrecen, which account for about 50-60% of the domestic yield.

Meanwhile, in the Transdanubia and Central and Southern Hungary, growers expect an average yield, while in the North and North-Eastern regions, yields may be 20-30 percent below average.
