Germany: Wholesale prices for fruit and vegetables 5,7% lower than last year

The prices at the wholesale markets were 3.1% higher in May of this year compared to last. According to the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis), the difference between April and March was +4.7% each. The goods sold in wholesale were 0.7% cheaper in May 2017 compared to April 2017.

In May 2017, the biggest influences on the general development were the rising prices for wholesale ores, metals and semi-finished metal (+9.6%). Compared to the previous month, the prices lowered by 1.5%. Compared to last year the prices for wholesale fuels and petroleum products (+6.0%) as well as live animals (+24.9%).

Further price increases were visible for the marketing of waste material and residual material (+12.9%), with grains, raw tobacco, seeds, animal feed (+5.3%) aswell as milk, dairy products, eggs, edible oils and dietary fats (+12.5%).

Fruit, vegetables and potatoes, on the other hand, were 5.7% cheaper than they were in May 2016.

The consumer prices for foodstuff stayed the same as last month. While there were significant drops of the prices for vegetables (-4.6%, among others, tomatoes: -19.8%; cucumbers: -14.2%; head and iceberg lettuce: -12.4%), the prices for dietary fats and oils (+2.2%, including butter: +4.4%) and dairy products (+1.1%; among others, UHT milk: +2.5%; heavy cream: +2.7%) were on the rise.
