The world's first entirely organic country

The Republic of San Marino wants to become the first entirely organic country in the world. It was announced by Augusto Michelotti (in the photo), Secretary of State for Agriculture, during a press conference held in Fiorentino on Friday 19th May 2017.

"We are currently creating the laws that will enable us to cultivate organic produce on our entire territory." We are talking about the fresh produce and livestock sectors. "We will also need to train operators. It won't be easy, but it would be great promotion on an international level."

On the one hand, we could say it is not that difficult to turn a territory covering 61 square km with 2,500 cultivated hectares. However, on the other hand, it will not be easy to create a chain and manage to sell the produce. Even if the main market could be the mass of tourists that reach Monte Titano and the Riviera Romagnola every year.

Carlo Romeo

"At the moment, food and food production are only considered in connection with chefs and show cooking and fresh produce does not attract viewers," explains Carlo Romeo, general director of San Marino Rtv.

Aida Selva, President of Consorzio Terra di San Marino

"Nobody talks about courgettes and artichokes on TV. To reach the larger public, we need new interpretations, journalists that can tell a story. We live on commonplaces, especially on TV. The fact that agriculture is not exalting is a cliche, just like copying American stuff."

At RTV San Marino, the "Zero zero verde" has had a good following since it began six years ago. Sonia Grassi is the host and is creating a sort of image archive for the Republic's food and agriculture sector.

The convention was moderated by journalist Roberto Chiesa. After the greetings by Daniela Giannoni, mayor of Castello Fiorentino, Luca Pelliccioni, President of Consulta Rsm and Matteo Selleri from Fruit&Company and President of Arga di San Marino, agronomist and Consorzio Terra di San Marino President Aida Selva intervened. "As Wendell Berry once said, eating is an agricultural act. Around 2500 hectares of the total 6100 are cultivated, i.e. 40% of the entire country."

Nutritionist Sandra Matteucci

Nutritionist Sandra Matteucci talked about the "here today, gone tomorrow" culture that has developed, based on information taken from Facebook. "I believe there are no therapeutic foods. While it is true that there is food with nutrients that are very good for us, it does not mean that it is therapeutic."

Journalist Italo Cucci

Journalist Italo Cucci stressed that those discussing food should at least look presentable, hinting at a few obese hosts discussing good eating habits.

"The world of sports provides varied information, also as regards eating habits. I remember that team doctor who invented the Zone Diet. I don't know if you get what I'm saying. Through the years, I saw plenty of ideas that had no substance whatsoever."

"Inter footballers trained by Helenio Herrera used to be given weird sachets to take after eating. That's all I'm saying. And let's not forget Fiorentina at the time of Mazzone - there are still ongoing suits for death at the workplace. In the Bologna team, they adopted the so-called parsley therapy, as somebody believed it was good for players. Zeman used to feed his teams lots of potatoes...pity that they never actually won everything."

"Each football team has its own nutritionist. I believe that there is not one-fits-all solution for sports people," concluded Cucci.
