Prime minister of Malaysia brings 43 durian fruits to China

The "One Belt One Road" International Summit was convened in Beijing earlier this month. The heads of state and government officials from 29 countries, representatives of 130 more countries and leaders of over 70 international organisations, all gathered in Beijing.

When foreign dignitaries visit China, this naturally also attracts the close attention of the media of those countries. The Malaysian prime minister brought 43 durian fruits as a gift to China. The number of fruits represents the 43 years of established diplomatic relations between the two countries. It also represented the wish to develop a 'foreign policy towards the durian' with China."

In the light of the fact that China currently prohibits the import of durians from Malaysia, this batch of Malaysian durian fruits clearly arrived in China after obtaining a special permission, otherwise the durians couldn't have passed through the Hong Kong port. After reaching the mainland in Hong Kong, the durian fruits were transported to Beijing. Here they were tasted by the deputies of the People's Congress in Beijing at the weekend. In the past few years, Malaysia has had the constant hope that fresh durians could be exported to China. It is predicted that it will actually become possible to bring fresh durian fruits to China, complete with peel, from next year onward.
