Photo report: South Australian Produce Market

On the third and last day of the Hort Connections 2017 there was a tour of the South Australia Produce Market. The market covers 222,000 m² and deals with 250,000 tonnes of fresh produce each year. It also has 10,000 m² of cold storage. There are 400 retailers and 2000 other personnel on site.

There is currently a Fresh Produce Promotion Centre being built on site which will showcase fresh produce to consumers using various methods including chef demonstrations.

The market also supports the Food Bank - two years ago they were donating 75,000 kg per annum, by June this year that will have increased to 1.1 billion kg.

Another initiative is to promote Australian produce in export markets, this is dome through a collaboration with tenants under the FRESH PLEASE brand. This produce is only supplied to supermarkets and as Australian produce is the cheapest they will differentiate on quality.
