According to data released by the Banileja Mango producers Association (Abapromango), in 2016, the Dominican Republic exported more than $20 million dollars in mangoes.
The producers of mangoes in the area of Bani (South), one of the main areas of cultivation of this tropical fruit in the country, exported 6.9 million dollars in each crop.
Yesterday, Abapromango held a meeting titled 'Prospects of the export of the Mango Dominican', with the aim of promoting mango sales abroad.
The director of the entity and the President of the Dominican Mango Cluster, Rafael Leger, said that in 2000, Haiti exported two million boxes and the Dominican Republic 300,000.
"But now we have surpassed them, with an exponential growth to Europe, the United States, and the islands of the Caribbean." In addition, he said, the producers from Bani plan to produce 535.500 boxes in each harvest.
Meanwhile, the President of Abapromango, Onesimo Mejia, said that the Keith mango, the most exported variety, accounted for 65% of the total exports made by that entity.
Other varieties grown are the mingolo, gold cream, and banilejo varieties.
