German retailers require recyclable biodegradable packaging

"Many German retailers are requiring European packagers to use wooden and pulp cells for summer products like peaches and nectarines. The material is 100% recyclable and biodegradable and prolongs shelf-life as it lets more air through. In addition, it can also make the produce stand out as the company message or logo can be printed directly on the cells," reports Luca Rivoira, sales manager for Retarder, a company supplying packaging and technological solutions to improve produce shelf-life.

Paper cells improve the quality of fruit and vegetables, combining protection and presentation. Unlike all other packaging, these cells protect produce from humidity. Paper cells guarantee good aeration and keep the produce hydrated. They are available in sizes 30x40, 30x50 and 40x60 for round fruit, pears and kiwis as well as for more than 40 different grades. In addition, single (60 gr) or double (120 gr) paper can be chosen as well as different colours and types. The paper can also be customised. Naturalplus is a new universal cell that protects the goods during transport and guarantees excellent visibility on the shelf.

For Retarder, sustainability is an essential value and it means it develops packaging solutions that help clients protect precious natural resources.

"Pulp is an organic material obtained from recycled paper that meets all protection and commercialisation requirements. It can be used for packaging, transport and to display any product and is suitable for the most innovative and unique ideas. The know-how we developed over the years enables us to supply technical support for exports as well as a reliable delivery service."
