Rick Mengers, ZON:
“Supply and demand for asparagus will increase considerably”
An early spring resulted in a large asparagus supply in recent weeks. “We therefore have to settle for low prices for the time of year. Last year, supply was slightly less, and we are now still before the Easter weekend. Then, prices were double what they are now. Yesterday morning, prices of double A asparagus were at a level of 6.90 euro at auction,” says Rick Mengers from ZON.
“Supply will increase considerably in coming weeks. The miniature tunnels have started by now, and will be completely in production next week. Fortunately, demand will also increase. It didn’t really start until last week on Friday, but there currently is good demand for asparagus from retail. However, I do think export is a bit disappointing currently. Especially demand from Germany is falling behind, and Switzerland is also not very interested.”
“The question now is how sales will be over the coming weeks, and that is mostly dependent on the weather. But the week before Easter always ensures good sales,” Rick concludes. ZON’s asparagus area once again grew this year, and is now almost 800 hectares. The quality of the asparagus is good, according to the asparagus seller. Because of the large supply, the growers are facing the challenge of recruiting enough workers.
