Pears from Southern Hemisphere complement the domestic category

“Domestic supplies of pears are still plentiful,” says Dan Wohlford with Oneonta Starr Ranch Growers. “We still have green and red D’Anjou as well as Bosc varieties available and I expect supplies to finish up around June.” According to Wohlford, supply levels are pretty normal for this time of the year. The Bartlett and Comice varieties are finished and Seckel is finishing up right now.

Chile and Argentina to start soon
The pear harvests in Chile and Argentina are just around the corner. The southern hemisphere brings in the Packham variety, which is a Bartlett type of pear that will turn yellow. “This variety complements very well with the domestic D’Anjou and Bosc varieties,” shared Wohlford. “Being able to offer multiple varieties is key for retailers. It allows for promotional opportunities and helps move the domestic crop.”

Pears are encouraged by moisture
Oneonta’s new crop of Bartlett’s is expected to be available mid-late July. Wohlford is optimistic about the new season. “We had lots of snow in Washington state and lots of moisture as a result. Moisture bodes really well for pears.”

Oneonta Starr Ranch Growers offers its pears in bulk, 2lb. and 3 lb. pouch bags. In addition, pears are packed in clamshells for club stores.
