Italy: Unisorting testing new pear sorting technologies

Compared to apples, pears are more difficult to process and sort. First of all, they do not float, so technical solutions must be implemented not to damage them. In addition, the shape varies greatly depending on the variety.

As explained by Unisorting vice-president Luca Montanari, "after acquiring the technological solutions of three companies - Longobardi Srl, Sammo Srl and SadoSrl - and creating Unisorting Srl in 2016, we started improving and innovating what we already had."

"For apples, for example, we managed to use the know-how developed by Longobardi thanks to its work with the apple sector in Trentino and Alto-Adige. As regards pears, we are developing a very innovative technology to assess the external quality of the fruit."

The new technology, which is currently being tested and will be implemented as of next season, is in line with Gruppo Unitec-Unisorting's objective. "We not only want to sort fruit, separating what is good from what isn't, we also want to classify it so as to customise our supply for different target consumers and/or markets."

In addition, Unisorting technologies cover all processing stages - crate and/or bin emptying, brushing, washing, packaging and palletisation, just to name a few. The company not only designs and manufactures the mechanical and electrical parts, but also also the electronic ones.

Unisorting supplies complete lines for various products such as apples, pears, onions, dates and citrus fruit. "We care about following the entire processing stage. The efficiency and gentleness of a line depends on how it handles the produce from start to finish."
