Exports of fruit & vegetables to Japan increasing

In 2016, the Netherlands exported 402,000 kilograms of snack tomatoes to Japan. That is 134,000 kilograms more than in the previous year. Strawberries were supplied for the third year in a row. The volume grew considerably compared to 2015: from 60,000 to more that 106,000 kilograms.

The figures are in KCB’s annual report, who make the export inspections for Japan. The annual report shows that the popularity of Japan as a sales market is increasing. Last year, 85 companies reported for inspection of the export of fruit vegetables to Japan. That is an increase of nine companies, compared to 2015. The companies are divided into the products bell pepper, tomato, strawberry, aubergine, pepper and cucumber.

Early in December, exports of bell pepper were halted because the growing season for all companies had finished. The export of Dutch bell pepper to Japan is comparable to previous years in 2016; more than six million kilograms. For the fourth year in a row, tomatoes, including snack tomatoes, have been exported to Japan. Four tomato companies remained in production during the winter months. In total, it concerned 402,000 kilograms in 2016 (2015: 268,000 kilograms, 2014: 288,000, 2013: 304,000, 2012: 101,000 kilograms). For the third year in a row, strawberries were supplied as well. Volume grew considerably compared to 2015: from 60,000 to more than 106,000 kilograms. In 2016, more than 3,000 kilograms of courgette was also sent to Japan.
