Henk van Doorne about the lettuce market:

“We are looking forward to Easter revival and the magic potion against fusarium”

The lettuce market is ‘a bit thin’ at the moment, according to lettuce grower and trader Henk van Doorne from ’s-Gravenzande. “The supermarket promotions are only so-so. Scandinavian countries and distant destinations such as the Middle East remain fairly loyal, but there is less interest closer to home. Because of that, prices have been dropping in the last ten days, while there isn’t even an extremely large supply.”

“The price for Romain lettuce is at a level of 25-28 cent. The market for large heads of lettuce is a bit friendlier, with a price level of 40-43 cent, but that supply remains limited,” Henk continues. He expects the market image to remain a bit similar in coming weeks. “I think the coming time will be somewhat difficult. Hopefully, the traditional Easter revival mid-April will cause some more demand.”

The exporter expects the first Dutch greenhouse fennel on the market within three weeks. Henk is involved with this cultivation as one of the ‘last of the Mohicans.’ Right now, the grower is mostly looking forward to a solution against fusarium in the cultivation of lettuce. “That has not been found yet. Dozens of magicians try to offer something to combat it, but the magic potion has not yet been found!”
