Italy: An assessment of the radicchio from Veneto

A rather constant trend for the various types of radicchio commercialised by VeronaMercato. This is what Marco Benedetti, quality control and price list inspector for the facility, reports.

"The most representative radicchio varieties in VeronaMercato are Rosso di Verona, Rotondo or Chioggia, early Treviso and late Treviso or late Rosso. The price of Verona has been increasing for the past ten days, also because quantities are decreasing. The year has anyway been rather positive for this variety, as quotations have never been too low."

As for Chioggia, quotations were rather low until December because of the slow demand and high volumes. Things changed in January, when they started to increase and have now reached €1.70-1.80/kg. "Fresh-cut companies have been rather interested in this variety, maybe due to the lack of leaf vegetables caused by the bad weather. Anyway, prices have been very satisfactory over the past month."

Late Treviso was more disappointing as the high volumes meant prices remained low.

"Quality has been good in general, as has that of the radicchio currently stored in units. Autumn and winter weren't very rainy, so shelf-life improved. The frost led to lower quantities in some cases, but we can't complain as regards quality."
