China: Apple market is slowly recovering

"The market price for apples fell in 2016 and the main producing areas encountered poor sales. So far, this year the market is gradually recovering with prices showing a steady growth trend, especially for the Fuji apple. The cold delivery price rose more than 70%. This good momentum is expected to continue at least until the autumn," Mr. Wang, from the Wang Lao Wu Fruit Industry told us.

"Low prices in 2016 were due to several factors. Firstly, the overall market was in poor shape, and consumption was not strong. Secondly, the market supply of early maturing apples had been reduced by about 20% compared with the previous years. Most of the apples were stored which affected the the market price adversely. When the new season started at the end of September 2016, the price of the Fuji apple fell by about 10% because of overproduction. In addition, speculators had conspired to push up the market price of Fuji apples."

Now, on the one hand, buyers are constantly purchasing as they are aware of the potential demand in the domestic market. On the other hand, with the restoration of political relations between China and Russia, Indonesia and other major exporters, apple exports to these countries have gradually returned to normal. At present, it is hard to tell how the price will change. However, it is expected that prices should be steadily rising before the arrival of the new apple production season in September."
