Effective storage technologies benefit transportation

During transportation, just as in storage, fruits and vegetables are influenced not only by temperature and relative humidity, but are also exposed to ethylene and airborne pathogens, which cause mold development, wilting and rotting. These changes in product appearance are unacceptable for most produce growers, distributors and retailers. Kriegler Farms, South African producer, packer, and exporter of table grapes, is not an exception.

To ensure delivery of product of “the best possible quality” to their customers, the company has installed the Bio Turbo 100i in their refrigerated truck. Bio Turbo 100i is Miatech’s technology for ethylene and airborne pathogens removal that protects produce during transportation in any type of reefer.

These days, there are numerous pathogen control products in the marketplace, but Kriegler Farms preferred Miatech, as they had already experienced the Bio Turbo and other Miatech technologies for their storage facilities with good results.

“We export to the UK, USA and Far East. We have also supplied Woolworths South Africa with a significant amount of grapes since 1994… UTE [Miatech’s dealer] and Miatech play a large role in this by assisting us with post-harvest technology and knowledge. We have installed a number of their products to control humidity in our holding and packing facilities, as well as Bio Turbo systems to remove ethylene and airborne pathogens in the same facilities and in our dedicated reefer truck, that we use to supply Woolworths.

With their assistance, we have managed to deliver even better grapes and have been able to increase our market share to all our preferred customers. This was directly attributable to supplying a fresher, healthier, and better looking product than our competition”, comments Johan Kriegler, CEO of Kriegler Farms, adding:

“It is pointless to produce the best quality product and then neglect the postharvest side of the business”.
