Costa Rica: Dehydrated pineapple for Italy and Israel

Fruta Sana, a company located in La Alegria de Siquirres, that processes and dehydrates pineapple for export, is going to export its products to Italy and Israel.

Fruta Sana was installed in November 2016 as a duty-free zone and employs about 30 people, in a community affected by the lack of job opportunities.

The company is owned by Italian and Israeli investors, who will export the dehydrated pineapple in two presentations to their countries: in chunks and in slices. According to Damaris Fallas, the General Manager of Fruta Sana, their goal is to increase shipments so that they can be exporting two containers by the end of the year.

Fallas said they bought the pineapple from producers from San Carlos, Upala, and the Caribbean region. When the fruit enters the plant, it is cleaned, cut, sliced, its heart is removed, then it is dehydrated and stored in a cold chamber; the product has no additives.

"The installation of companies in less developed areas and places outside the metropolitan area enhances job creation, helps farmers to place their product, and encourages innovation and the generation of added value," said Marco Alfaro, the Regional head of PROCOMER

The company's future plan is to create a brand to get to other export markets.
