"We started off with summer pears and, after a slow beginning, things picked up. We usually pay the summer produce to growers by December," explains Ettore Ceccarelli, co-owner with brothers Achille and Massimiliano.
As regards winter pears, high-quality Decana did very well, while Kaiser and Conference had to face the strong competition of produce from Belgium and Holland. "Abate were rather stable with no big problems. Volumes were 15% lower and the market was quiet. Those who produced around 20-25 tons per hectare, had a good gross saleable production. Considering all batches and all grades, we can say the season was satisfactory."
Ceccarelli export around 80% of their produce. The British market, very demanding for what concerns quality, was affected by the Brexit effect, especially in the summer, after which sales picked up.
The company is investing in quality, especially in order to meet the "4 residue" parameter, i.e. the maximum number of chemical residues accepted by the majority of European retailers. In addition, for every active principle, only 33% of the maximum limit, established by the EU, is allowed.
