Italy: SCF make innovative fresh produce packaging

Gruppo Scurria has been working in the polystyrene market for over 30 years and has great experience in the construction sector. Today, with SCF Packaging, it has also become a leader in the packaging for the food transport sector. Their innovative printing processes make packaging unique and appealing.

"Expanded polystyrene (EPS) enables a storage that maintains food fresh for longer, keeping its organoleptic qualities intact," explains co-owner Alessandro Scuria (in the photo).

"Our polystyrene packaging was developed especially for the horticultural, nursery, dairy, fishing and medical sectors, as well as for various uses in the cold chain. EPS packaging is our core business and we work alongside leading multinationals in the sector."

Polystyrene is environmentally friendly because it is 100% recyclable. It is very light, but also very resistant. Its elasticity means it is shock-absorbent, its lightness means it's easy to transport and, in addition, it protects products from contamination. Last but not least, it can have the most varied shapes.

"Innovation, research and high-quality enable us to put excellent products on the market that guarantee food safety and hygienic conditions and that respect the environment. Unlike wood and cardboard, our containers do not deteriorate, rot, mould or have problems with water and humidity. Thanks to polystyrene, the product is not damaged during post-harvesting."

Over the years, the Group has improved its quality management system - all facilities operate in compliance with standard UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 and environmental certification UNI EN ISO 14001:2004.

The quality department is committed to monitoring and improving production processes to guarantee high quality standards.

"The thought that our products help maintain the freshness and hygiene of food makes us really proud but also pushes us to invest more on R&D to manufacture products that increasingly meet market needs."

Fruit and vegetable crates were developed to improve the quality of the produce. All formats (30x20, 30x40, 30x50 and 40x60) have rounded corners to prevent cuts or incisions.

In addition, 3.5 or 5 cm windows can be created to showcase the product as well as holes on the bottom and sides to enhance or reduce air circulation.

All models are stackable and equipped with handles.

Here are the main characteristics of crates for the fresh produce sector:
  • certified for food
  • product thermal insulation
  • protection against thermal shocks
  • protection against humidity
  • protection of the most delicate products
  • aroma preservation
  • ideal for the cold chain
  • temperatures maintained for longer
  • preserved freshness and hygiene
  • essential for wet products
  • 100% recyclable

All formats can be customised in full-colour. Colours are non-toxic, resistant to humidity and do not penetrate. The produce is unaltered and everything is done without the cost of a press form.
