Joep van Koevorden, BioTropic:
"When organic top fruit is off the market, demand for overseas erupts"
Two weeks ago, BioTropic started the overseas top fruit season with the arrival of the first Argentinian Williams pears, and will be followed by the first Red Bartlett pears on Friday. “The supply of organic pears is slightly scarcer in Argentina than last year,” says Joep van Koevorden from BioTropic. According to the importer, demand for overseas organic pears is largely dependent on the European supply. “As soon as we are out of Dutch fruit, the European season erupts. The market for organic pears is normally fairly empty during this period, but there is still a bit left now, and the seasons will run parallel to each other for a while.”
“The first overseas Royal Gala apples will arrive in two weeks. Overseas apples go even less well together with the European harvest. Last year, the apples ended up very high, and I expect we will start this season at a slightly lower season. For pears, prices are regular. In general, prices for overseas organic pears are lower than those of European fruit. Qualitatively, the harvest is looking well,” Joep says.
“The organic top fruit area is fairly stable in Argentina, and we expect a stable volume this season. The overseas organic pear season for BioTropic lasts until July, when the first Spanish and Italian organic pears will arrive on the market again. The apple supply from Argentina and New Zealand immediately after that will last until mid-August.” The company mainly markets the products through organic wholesalers and retail, and Germany is its biggest sales market.
