Increased Ukrainian onion production boosts exports

Ukraine has increased its yellow onion exports to the EU and other regions by more than 5,000 tons from July to December 16, compared to the 3700 tons in the same period of 2015, according to Tetiana Hetman, head manager of Information analysis centre 'Info-Shuvar'.

“Increased production has meant that onion prices are half of what they were last year, which has helped encourage exports. It's a great achievement that the Ukraine has been able to almost double the volumes being sent to the EU," shared Tetiana.

Bulgaria and Great Britain are the main buyers of the Ukrainian onions amongst all the EU countries, with Great Britain buying 1400 tons of only peeled onions. This was the largest amount of peeled onions exported last season, and record numbers are also expected this season.

The export locations have also changed. Iraq significantly increased their import amounts, by 2500 tons in the second half of the season, compared to their initial shipment of 300 tons in the first half, bringing the total from January till June 2016 to 5500 tons. Many see this increase as a good indication that this coming season could bring a record amount of exports to Iraq.

According to the daily price monitoring from Info-Shuvar, bulk onion prices at the are currently selling for 3.00-3.50 UAH/kg (010 - 0.12 EUR/kg) at the Shuvar market, the biggest agricultural wholesale market in Western Ukraine, compared to 7.50-8.00 (0.25-0.27 EUR/kg), the same time last year.
