Belgium currently has a good demand for avocados. “We currently offer especially Spanish avocados, and I expect the season to last for another six weeks. In any case, there is not much supply. I get the impression that there is not much product on the market in Brussels. Because of this, prices are much higher than normal,” says Jan Vermeiren from Exofi.

According to Jan, the price level has risen 20 to 25 per cent because of the smaller supply from Spain. “Normally, they are between 6 and 8 euros, and it is much higher now. We prefer Spanish avocados, because they do not have to come from very far. They are usually well-matured on the trees, and can be quickly delivered. Exofi used to work with various shipping agents, but now we only have one. It is the only one that can guarantee daily delivery, and we are very satisfied with them. The products are also marketed under their brand, Novofruit.”
Exofi supplies three varieties, Reed, Fuerte and Pinkerton. “For us, flavour is most important. Many of our clients are from the catering industry, and they want tasty avocados. Exofi has many Moroccan customers. Our Belgian buyers want RTE avocados in particular, and Moroccans want greenskins. We see both types growing in number of sales.”
