Mexico: State of Mexico dispatches fifth shipment of avocados to Canada

The Secretary of Agriculture, Jose Calzada, and the governor of the State of Mexico, Eruviel Ávila, recently waved off the entity's fifth shipment of avocados to Canada.

According to a statement of the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), more than 240 tons have been marketed to date.

Calzada Rovirosa, who was present at the opening of the 2017 Agricultural Programs, highlighted that, thanks to these coordinated actions between the federal government, the local government, and producers, the avocado, which has a high commercial, was changing the lives of people.

This product, he said, is an excellent ambassador that opens international markets and consolidates Mexico as the leading producer and exporter of this fruit, with 70 percent of the global share.

Thus, the State of Mexico is the country's third largest producer with 100 thousand tons per year.

The federal official said that, in the international arena, Mexico continued to place its "principles, people, territory, and essence before any other interests, because it makes us good partners in trade and more competitive."

Regarding the delivery of more than 387 million pesos in incentives for agriculture and aquaculture, Calzada Rovirosa said they needed to be fair and equitable and that their priority was to assist small farmers before planting and the rainy season, as this would result in a more productive and competitive field.

Producers were given certificates, vouchers and electronic cards to purchase seeds, fertilizers, soil improvers, technological packages, hydro-agricultural works and machinery, among other benefits, at the event.

In turn, governor Avila Villegas said that, thanks to the support of the federal government, the state had assured its entire agricultural area and its cattle herd for the fifth consecutive year, with an investment of 100 million pesos.
