Italy: No problems for Sicilian melons

"The preventive measures put in place to avoid viruses attacking melons have proved effective. Non-woven fabric covers and anti-insect nets successfully prevented the spreading of whiteflies, responsible for transmitting diseases."

This is according to Consorzio Mundial president, Domenico Raneri, when asked about rumours regarding problems for the melon season in the Licata region of Sicily.

"We did worry in December and January, but now the situation has improved. Fruits are currently the size of an orange and harvesting should start in early April," explains the president (in the photo).

In addition to the preventive measures described above, the days with temperatures below zero also helped, as they exterminated part of the whitefly population.

The Licata area is famous for its Red Falcon cantaloupe netted melons. The Mundial consortium represents 10 operators cultivating over 2 million plants.

"We will continue promoting and safeguarding the brand as these melons are the emblem of an entire territory."
