Newplant President Piero Turroni and Franco Girotti from Apfruit talk about a crop that is finally recovering after a few bad years.
"At Newplant, we have a couple of varieties that are doing very well. Ercole is very early and is also suitable for central/southern Italy. It is also cultivated in Spain. Giove is instead very popular for its deep green colour. They are both very productive varieties that adapt well to our territory."
Newplant is also testing the Athos variety, which will be available starting next year. Its productivity and quality have already improved.
"Asparagus has been doing really well lately and profits have been excellent. We recommend growing 1 to 3-5 hectares. With an average yield of 8-10 tons per hectare, you get a good Gross Saleable production."
Other two popular varieties, this time from Apofruit, are Eros and Franco. The former is mostly appreciated in the north, while the other ripens earlier.
"There is still room on the market for asparagus and profits are good. The varieties mentioned above guarantee both productivity and high quality," reports Turroni.
