The mango harvest season recently began in Oaxaca and packers are sending the first truckloads of Tommy and Ataulfo mangoes to the United States and Canada.
The mango harvest brings a relentless pace to everyday work in the eastern part of the isthmus region. The work begins at dawn in the orchards, amidst the trees laden with fruit. It continues in the packaging, transportation and delivery of the mangoes to market.
According to the producers and authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture (SAGARPA), there have been no mishaps reported in the delivery of the mangoes to the US market so far: "That's good, because 90% of our exports go to the US," said the president of the mango product system in Oaxaca, Roberto Velasquez Nivon.
He also stated that there was uncertainty among producers because the US might impose tariffs on Mexican exports, but that they trusted the federal government would reach a favorable trade agreement.
In 2016, producers exported more than 34 thousand tons of mangoes, i.e. 18% more than the 29 thousand tons that they exported in the previous year.
The main destinations for Oaxaca's mangoes are the United States and Canada. Mango exports to these countries amounts to more than 75.4 million dollars and generates five thousand jobs
