Daniel Bustamante, of Prohass:

"Peru: "This campaign we'll have up to 40% more avocados"

"The 2017 avocado campaign will undergo a profile change due to the integration of new production zones. The fruit will be available to the world sooner than usual, from the beginning of March. In any case, the work with the exporters to guarantee the supply of avocados with the right maturity and desired quality will be even more arduous," assured Daniel Bustamante, director of Prohass.

Likewise, it has been confirmed that this year there will be a productive growth of around 30 to 40%, with between 210 and 250 thousand tonnes suitable for export, while in 2016 this figure stood at 180 thousand tonnes. "The main reason for the increase is the recovery of plantations that had been affected by 2 consecutive years of high temperatures. This campaign, we have enjoyed better climatic conditions, and new plantations have also become productive. Currently, Peru is planting approximately 2,000 hectares per year," assured the representative.

The political situation in the US, which is the world's largest avocado consumer, is not considered a problem for the distribution of the Peruvian fruit in this market.

"I don't think there will be any problems to ship the fruit to the United States, because they, just like Mexico, have obtained a smaller production this year. The United States is the most important market and will be the main recipient for the fruit. For its part, Europe is growing at an average of 25% per year, and other markets, such as China and Japan, while not growing at the same pace, are also emerging markets," highlighted Bustamante.

The creation of the World Avocado Organization (WAO) is one of the biggest steps in the avocado market, as it will support the growth of the fruit's consumption and ensure its recognition in both traditional and new markets. "We have joined forces with different producing countries to create the WAO, in which we will work together to promote the consumption of this fruit. We recently had a meeting where we were able to start organising the campaign and everything is starting to take shape," concluded the spokesperson.
