Fruit Exporters Association of Chile helping rebuild fire affected areas

The Fruit Exporters Association of Chile (ASOEX) has confirmed their support for reconstruction in the areas impacted by fires that have affected the country. An undisclosed amount of funding will be committed to relief measures.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of human lives, houses, infrastructure, labor and animal resources in the affected areas. We are committed to working with the authorities in their efforts to solve the problems that affect us as a country. This includes contributing to reconstruction in the areas impacted by the fires, especially in terms of housing and schools," said Ronald Bown, Chairman Of The Board of ASOEX.

According to official information recently submitted by the Government of Chile, the affected area exceeds 586 thousand hectares (July to date) between the regions of Coquimbo and La Araucanía. According to data provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, 49% of the hectares affected by the fire correspond to forest plantations, 24% to native forest, 24% to scrubland and prairies, and 2% to agricultural land.

ASOEX is evaluating the situation of producers and exporters located in the areas affected by the fires. The only known damage at this point is a fruit pack house destroyed in its entirety in the town of Chépica, with damage valued between US $8 and 9 million, and the consequent loss of jobs for more than 100 people. In terms of export infrastructure, such as phytosanitary inspection sites and ports, these are functioning at full speed, with all exports proceeding smoothly.

ASOEX is working with the foundation Desafio Levantemos Chile and has established a special bank account to accept donations. Funds will be used to rebuild schools and houses in areas inhabited by agricultural workers.
