"There is no debating on the pear price"

"Pear prices have pulled up considerably in recent weeks. The purchasing price for Conference was still around 60/65 cents a few weeks ago. At the moment it is 75 to 80 cents. They've gone up a lot in a short time. The great thing on the market here is that customers aren't debating or discussing the prices at the moment. If the quality is good, they're willing to pay for it. The products are picked up without discussion," says Ludger Nollet of Nollet Fruit, trader on Mabru.

Different Jonagold prices

He indicates that it's a different story for apples. "The story for apples has two sides. There are Jonagold getting a good price, but too little is being given for certain types. This despite there not being that much difference between them. The Jonagold A2 ++ is around 32 cents and the E-Extra is around 70 cents. That's almost twice as much! The latter variety is the results of hail in Sint-Truiden. There is often a spot or a mark on those apples. Other than that the quality is fine. A striking difference."

He indicates that other than this there is not much difference in the trade at the moment. "It has been a lot calmer during the frost period, we noticed that in the market. Small traders and market stall holders buy less, as products freeze more quickly. Many shopkeepers in Brussels also display outside, and they can't do that if it's too cold."
