Oranges leave a strawberry aftertaste

Il Fragolino ® blood oranges

Motta Cooperativa Agricola was established in 2005 by 21 citrus fruit producers who decided to combine their strength as regards the cultivation and commercialisation of clementines, tangerines, Moro and Navelina oranges, peaches, Sanguinello and Tarocco oranges.

As reported by the Administrator, Lucio Olivieri (in the photo), the groves cover 230 hectares in total and are located in the Motta Sant'Anastasia plain in Sicily.

Each member follows internal speci-fications to obtain a product with high quality standards.

In Sicily, blood oranges are history, culture and tradition. The company's flagship products are Il Fragolino® blood oranges, which have a unique taste as well as a pigmented peel and flesh.

The name Il Fragolino (the strawberry) was chosen because these oranges leave a strawberry aftertaste.

It is a clone of the Tarocco variety named Tarocco Lempso and registered by the cooperative with the name Il Fragolino Arancia Rossa®.

Fruits are seedless and with a round shape. The average weight is 250-300 grams and both the peel and the flesh have a deep colour and a balanced sugar/acid ratio. These characteristics are enhanced by the soil and production area.

"In addition, thanks to the characteristics of the peel, the fruit is more resistant to common post-harvesting problems caused mainly by Penicillium digitatum and P. italicum, both during storage and distribution."

Motta Cooperativa Agricola is part of Consorzio Produttori Ortofrutticoli Euroagrumi, established in 1986 by 10 cooperatives to promote and commercialise large volumes of local citrus fruit. The produce (around 1,000 tons a year) is available on the market between early December and late April.

"Feedback was positive and sales met our expectations. Customers are increasingly more demanding and are looking for new flavours and excellent quality. Our Fragolino oranges are perfect for this."
