Ward van Damme, Agri Link:

“Market for winter carrots is starting to move somewhat”

“There is finally some movement,” says Ward van Damme from Agri Link. The bad weather in Southern Europe and the cold in Eastern Europe, however, are not yet affecting the current market very much yet. “There is slightly more demand, resulting in slightly better prices. And that is good, because the carrot market was completely halted in recent months.”

The carrot stocks from Poland will not be off the market right away. Frost will not clear them all, according to Van Damme. “The developments in Poland will also continue, but it depends on where you are in Poland, naturally. The cold will leave its mark here and there, but it is already much less cold than about two weeks ago. Poland is currently also starting to use up-to-date cooling cell and processing technology. Carrots are no longer being stored in non-isolated sheds.”

If the cold in neighbouring countries lasts, the remainder of the season will improve for the Dutch market, Van Damme expects. Prices are currently between 10 and 13 cents. Agri Link from Flevoland mediates in both conventional and organically cultivated chicory roots, winter carrot and celeriac, and agricultural and horticultural products. Chicory root trade is calm, although Agri Link is working hard on the contracts for the coming season. The celeriac market continues to run steadily, prices are around 16 cents.
