Italy: Slight radicchio losses due to cold temperatures

The low temperatures of the last few nights are not worrying radicchio producers in Veneto. Actually, losing some produce can be healthy for the market and the cold temperatures improve quality.

Cristiana Furiani, President of Consorzio del Radicchio di Verona Igp, reports that "in our area in the Verona province, we haven't even reached -10°C. The frost, combined with the drought, is leading to a few losses, though percentages are sill insignificant at the moment. The situation may worsen if these conditions persist."

At the same time, cold temperatures improve the quality of radicchio, especially for what concerns its crunchiness. "We can say that the average quality of radicchio is very good this year. Unfortunately the market is not responding with enthusiasm."

"Demand increased before the Christmas period and then dropped as soon as the festivities were over. We are now confident it will improve again thanks to the low temperatures."

Owner of Geofur, Cristiana Furiani noticed how, especially before Christmas, "demand of PGI radicchio from Verona and late radicchio from Treviso increased, whereas demand for the other types remained constant with respect to 2015. We now have to see whether this is an episode or a trend."
