RKG Asia on importing Italian kiwifruit and Spanish citrus

"Chinese consumers are critical, selective, and demand premium quality"

“Chinese consumers nowadays have easy access to a wide range of imported fruits from around the world. Their need for quality imported fruit continues to grow, but at the same time, they are the hardest to please. They have very particular tastes and preferences, and have become relatively spoiled in terms of having access to many premium varieties. Australian growers understand this well, and have grown varieties specifically for the Chinese market, enjoying premium returns in the process. In Europe, because China is still not a main destination for growers, it will require some time for them to learn about the Chinese market,” explains Kevin from RKG Asia Ltd.

“A good example is the Spanish stone fruit launched last year in 2016. The plums that were sent to China did not have the sweetness preferred by the Chinese. In addition, they lacked the bloom, which the Chinese consider as a sign of freshness for plums. The result was not what the Spanish growers were hoping for. This is definitely a good learning experience, and I am sure the Spanish growers and pack houses will find ways to meet the Chinese preferences in the coming season."

“Buyers know what they want, what we have to do is to match our products with their criteria.” RKG Asia Ltd, a subsidiary of RK Growers Srl Italy, is supplying fresh fruits from Italy and Spain to Asia. Currently the company is exporting fresh kiwifruit from Italy, follow by Spanish citrus in February to China.

Spanish citrus
RKG Asia expects their first container of Lane Late Spanish orange to arrive in China in February 2017. “We are currently working closely with Spanish growers and our pack house, to explain to them what the Chinese are looking for. In addition, we have arranged farm and pack house visits for our Chinese customers, so they can have a better understanding of our products, allowing them to exchange ideas and suggestions directly with our growers and pack house. From our experience, Chinese consumers appreciate citrus fruit that is firm, sweet, juicy, and preferably without spots or de-colorations in appearance. Larger sizes are preferred over smaller sizes. Spanish citrus has done well in recent years in the Chinese market, and hopefully this trend will continue.”

Italian kiwifruit
“We are currently exporting Italian kiwifruit to Shanghai. New Zealand kiwifruit has become pretty much a standard for imported kiwifruit in China, as they have done extremely well in educating Chinese consumers about their products. It is our task to educate Chinese consumers in regards to our Italian kiwifruit. There are a number of ongoing breeding projects in Italy that aims to create new varieties that may meet the needs of Chinese consumers. One of them is the Dori, a golden, sweet, juicy, yellow-fleshed kiwifruit variety. This variety will have a longer shelf-life, which is perfect, considering shipping time from Italy to China is over 35 days. Its shape is rounder and slightly elongated and the fruit boosts high brix levels. The Chinese market is huge, even if your product is favoured by a small group of buyers, the volume can be enormous."
