Stationary potato and stagnant onion market

When the year is almost over, companies usually make an assessment of what they have achieved and how they will improve in the following year. F.lli Torti makes no exception.

For what concerns the commercialisation of potatoes, the situation is rather complicated at the moment. Consumption is rather stationary but prices increase nonetheless due to the industry segment. Some multinationals are buying a lot of produce, so prices increase everyday - this of course leads producers to selling their potatoes to the processing industry rather than on the fresh produce market.

"The situation on the onion market is rather stagnant. Prices started very low and there is no sign they will increase, as there are still a lot of volumes available on the market."

With respect to 2015, the price, quality and sales of potatoes have remained unvaried, while onions performed better last year.

It is therefore almost impossible to make a forecast for 2017. "Onions will definitely suffer again, as prices are too low to increase a lot in a short period of time. It is also difficult to say what will happen to potatoes."

Next year, F.lli Torti will also start the exclusive sale of Solana seeds. The varieties have all been tested and provided excellent results. After an Open Day in September, feedback was very good from the many producers who recently put in their orders.

"We really hope the next season will be positive both for the new varieties and the market in general and would like to take the chance to wish our clients, suppliers and FreshPlaza readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."
