Yuzu winter solstice baths in Japan

As is the tradition around the winter solstice, some in Japan are taking a dip into baths filled with yuzu citrus fruit. This custom has been passed on for centuries and is believed by some to ward off the coming of winter colds.

Around this time it is not uncommon to see hot spring resorts around the country filling their baths with the citrus fruit, giving the whole place a unique smell.

It “smelled sweet and slightly sour,” said Kyosei Moriguchi, a 6-year-old who joined five other classmates from his local pre-school for a fragrant soak at Mandara-yu, a well-known bathhouse, on Dec. 20.

Because the facility is closed on Wednesdays, the yuzu special was offered a day earlier than the official date of Dec. 21.
