Extremadura's fruit exports have grown by 10% this year compared to 2015, mainly due to the opening of new markets, such as China, or the consolidation in countries where its shipments were recently granted access.
Also noteworthy this year is the amount of Extremaduran fruit sold in countries like Brazil, as explained to Efe by the president of the Association of Agro-food Cooperatives of Extremadura (Acopaex), Domingo Fernández.
All these circumstances have allowed exports to grow, despite the fact that this year's production has been smaller than in 2015.
For their part, tomato exports in 2016 have remained at similar levels to those recorded last year, as despite optimistic production prospects, the growth was only moderate compared to 2015.
Between 70 and 75 percent of Extremadura's total tomato production has been exported during 2016.
