Ate Kalsbeek, Halls:

"Christmas demand for avocados will start this weekend"

It is the silence before the storm for the avocado market right now. "This weekend it really will be coming down on us," expects Ate Kalsbeek of the Dutch sales office of Halls. "So next week, it is going to be very busy for us. The ripening units are full and we are completely ready! After Christmas, it will be less busy in the Netherlands, but the export will continue. In Scandinavia, avocados are very popular at Sylvester night."

Now, there are enough avocados on the market. The prices are on a reasonable level with a price of about 15 euros for ripe avocados. Halls only gets its avocados from Chile for the moment. "Especially for the ripened avocados, we think that the Colombian product is not good enough. That country has a lot of potential, but needs to learn a lot more before it is ready. The various fruit settings that are ripened together still do not supply the product that meets our requirements. As long as it is possible, we will not touch those," says Ate.

He is satisfied with the past year, 2016. "We have had a good year and we are growing swiftly. The major part of our assortment is avocado, but next week we are expecting the first delivery of lychees from South Africa."
