USDA's 2015 pesticide report is promising

This marks the 25th year of the USDA's Pesticide Data Program and the report this year brings mostly good news. Each year however, the report comes with controversy and opens up a new topic of debate. After sampling produce from around the country the report shows low levels of pesticides well below the limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Samples are tested for pesticides and commodities, and randomly taken to be close to the time and point of consumption without regard to country of origin variety, growing season or organic labeling.

“In 2015, over 99 percent of the samples tested had residues well below the tolerances established by EPA with 15 percent having no detectable pesticide residue,” the USDA reports.

After testing all samples, only less than one percent were shown to exceed safe levels and only 2/3 of those were originally grown in the U.S.
