Australia: Christmas without cherries

A big part of the Australian Christmas involves cherries, meaning some people might not have the ideal Christmas this year. In the midst of a cherry shortage all stone fruits are looking to cost an extra $5 per kilogram this holiday season.

Coles has apologized, blaming the shortage on rain that has caused swelling and ruining cherry crops, while Woolworths is currently selling cherries for nearly $20 a kilo.

Our Aussie Christmas, as we know and love it, could be about to change. We might not get to eat one of our favourite foods this year.

She also said crops of cherries were down about 50 or 60 per cent because of the wet weather during the growing season. With demand at an all-time high suppliers are rushing to get stock on shelves before Christmas.
