UK: Farming sector plea for single market access

The food and farming industries in the UK are demanding tariff-free access to the single market after the Brexit this year. With about 75% of UK food exports going to the EU the sector has growing concerns over seasonal workers in the country.

In a letter from the Farming unions to the Government they stated, "For our sector, maintaining tariff-free access to the EU single market is a vital priority." With the chance of visa-controlled permits suggested by the NFU some in the industry are worried it could cause a labor crisis in the country. Fewer seasonal workers could lead to rotting crops left unharvested and higher labor costs which may lead to increased produce prices.
