India: Banana shipments trending up

Bananas have been arriving in droves in the city after rain in parts of central and western regions of the state in the last two weeks. Banana farmers have decided on an early harvest hoping for decent returns as any delay in harvest would only mean further drops in prices. Due to the high volume prices are expected to fall.

“Consumption of bananas during the rainy or monsoon season is far less, particularly during the post-Deepavali period,” say the wholesale traders.

Two dealers A. Vijayendran and A. Manivel said that the price of ‘poovan’ had fallen from Rs. 400 to Rs. 250 a bunch in a month.

The plethora of bananas arriving, costed at $11.69 a bunch during the pre-Deepavali season, has now shot up to $17.53. The market which usually handles 8,000 bunches daily has now been witnessing an additional load of 1,000 to 1,500 bunches, they said.
