China: Dragon fruit losses up to 35%

"Due to the heavy rainfall this year, the production of dragon fruit is predicted to suffer a loss of about 30% to 35% but, thankfully, the quality of the fruit has not been affected. Compared to last year, the average market price of dragon fruit has dropped by 15%," says Mr. Zhong Zhenyi from Guangxi's Longguo Family Development.

"Dragon fruits start to flower in May and ripen about 20 days later. The blooming season lasts until the end of October, although some fruits can still be harvested until the end of December. The company has a dragon fruit orchard of 20 hectares in Nanning in Guangxi. The main variety is one they have bred themselves. This year is a fruit bearing year, so a yearly production volume of 300,000 kg can be achieved. It is estimated that 2017 will be a year of abundant harvest, with a yearly production volume of about 450,000 kg."

"Compared to the dragon fruits of Vietnam, the ones we cultivate are pretty big, with a sweetness of 18 to 22 brix. In order to guarantee an efficient use of fertilisers, the company works together on the long-term with a research institution in Shanghai. In the cultivation process, we use a special fertiliser for dragon fruits. At present we have bred more than 100 dragon fruit varieties. Apart from the double coloured dragon fruits we sell to wholesale markets, supermarkets and online shops, we also sell dragon fruit sprouts."

"Apart from the cultivation grounds for high-quality dragon fruits in Guangxi, the company also owns orchards in Yunnan, Sichuan, Fujian and Zhejiang, in the South, and also in Jilin, Shandong and other Northern regions. We are working hard to develop a new kind of agricultural formula for a sustainable increase in value. In this way we want to push the development of the industry forward."
