Gregory Vickers, from White Lions:

"Peru: "This year we will have 20% more garlic"

Improved production
Peruvian exports of garlic began in August with good omens. Production has benefited from weather conditions and volumes will be higher. Gregory Vickers from White Lions, tells us about the current situation: "Right now, we are working with violet garlic, and the truth is we are seeing improved yields compared to last year's production. The garlic's caliber and color are surprisingly satisfactory. In a couple of weeks we will be done with this variety to start the Chinese garlic season" he stated.

The overall production picture is promising, where it is estimated that Peru as a country would have a 20% increase in garlic exports. "The garlic market is more lively than in past years. We are receiving requests for Peruvian garlic, from 'non-classical' countries such as Canada, United States, Spain and the Netherlands, among others. We are taking advantage of this opportunity to open new markets and show both our quality as well as our incredible caliber", said the representative.

Balanced market
While other European and Asian countries have already completed the campaign and other Latin American countries are yet to begin, Peru is in full campaign. "A one to two months trading window to sell our fresh garlic is opening. Peru is known worldwide as a producer and exporter of quality products, which gives us an advantage before we start. We, as a company, have doubled our acreage, and seeing this business opportunity there are several producers who are taking similar initiatives, " added the spokesman..

It must be stressed that last year, there having been a decline in production, prices increased, which in turn resulted in a balanced campaign. "This year we come with large volumes and we believe that prices will remain high, so we expect to have a strong campaign. Next season we will be expanding into other Peruvian regions to ensure continuity in the supply of our garlic and to better exploit other potential market windows," concluded Vickers.
