Tropical fruit in Turkey’s southern coast

One of Turkey’s main citrus fruit producing regions, Mersin on the Mediterranean coast, now aims to become a tropical fruit production center.

The local municipality is encouraging growers to diversify their produce to maximize the region’s optimal climate.

“We already grow a variety of fruits including kiwifruits, cherries, apples, peaches and citrus fruits here but in recent years growers have complained about market conditions. Tropical fruits are easy to grow in this climate and they are very much in demand,” said local mayor Hamit Tuna. Growers use municipality owned land for their tropical fruit.

Dragon fruit, goji berries, passion fruit and Indian fig (prickly pear) are amongst the new fruits being grown in the region.
