Record fruit and vegetable production in Turkey

Turkish fruit and vegetable sector sees record production this year. According to Şemsi Bayraktar, Chair of the Turkish Union of Chambers of Agriculture, vegetable production is expected to be over 30 million tons, a first for the country, whilst fruit production will be 18.9 million. 

“Vegetable production has been on the increase since 2010. It went from 27.2 million in 2008 to 29.6 million in 2015. Until this year; our best year for fruit production had been in 2013 with 18.2 million.” Added Bayraktar.

Compared to 2015, the biggest increase in vegetable production are in broccoli (17.7 %), garlic (13.1 %) followed by zucchinis (11.6 %) and onion (11.5%). In fruit production, the biggest increase in seen in apples (13.7 %) and cherries (11.9 %).
