André Boon, Scherpenhuizen:

Peru enters the market with its mangoes extremely early

Brazil is the main player on the mango market at the moment, but the Peruvian supply will erupt within several weeks. “I have never experienced this before,” says André Boon of Scherpenhuizen, who has been working in the mango trade for quite a number of years. “Two years ago, the first supply from Peru arrived around 8 January, and now supply will start arriving another week or two earlier. That will result in plenty of mangoes on the market in December, at least.”

Boon explains the early start is thanks to the good growing season. “We had few weather extremes, due to this, the trees started flowering early. After all, we cannot command nature. This also means the season will end a little earlier. In the southernmost region of Casma, where the final mangoes will come from, 20 to 30 per cent of the trees have already flowered. They have about 600 containers of export available there.”

“Brazilian supply mostly consists of Tommy Atkins, supplemented with Palmer. Additionally, more Keitt and Kent are now also arriving. Slightly bigger sizes are available in proportion, and that causes some pressure on the market. Good, fibreless mangoes have fairly good prices between 6 and 7.50 euro. The Tommy Atkins mangoes are far below that,” says Boon, who personally only has a small programme of Brazilian mangoes. Competition of Israeli and Spanish mangoes will be limited according to the importer. “They are on their last legs.”
